Chania, Greece

Chania, “Haa-nya,” on the northwest coast of Crete, draws you in with its colorful history and contemporary allure.

Strolling through Chania Old Town, the heart of the city, takes you on a journey through winding cobbled streets. (See me in Old Town Chania on the home page.)

The restored Venetian architecture now houses shops, hotels, and nightclubs, such as the Fagotto, where locals gather to listen to jazz. Sunset strolls along the harbor add a touch of romance to your visit.

At the lighthouse, you can capture stunning views of the Sea of Crete, or on the promenade, you can savor local dishes at a variety of tavernas and restaurants. (Don’t miss the fresh seafood and a shot of raki).

Beyond the town, an abundance of natural wonders awaits. Balos and Elafonissi beaches are not to be missed. For adventure seekers, bring hiking boots and navigate the steep Samaria Gorge.

For those interested in ethical travel, several olive farms host tours, giving you a taste of Greece while allowing you to support local businesses.

But what truly sets Chania apart is its relaxed atmosphere and the kindness of its people. It’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.
